Christie’s brought the hammer down on the most expensive Rolex wristwatch ever sold at auction. Rare 1949 Oyster Perpetual Rolex was auctioned for a price of $1, 2 million and thus set a new world record. Rolex introduced the ‘Air-King’ reference 5500 in 1957. Amongst the earliest versions of the model are some interesting and unusual dial variations which were produced before the design was standardised in the 1960s. Above is a superb early example of the 5500 that is in outstanding condition. In 1905 Wilsdorf launched his own company in England and started producing high quality watches. Then in 1908, he registered the Rolex brand in La Chaux-de-Fonds Switzerland. The company remained in England fifteen years approximately and in 1920 moved to Geneva. It was not until 1946 that Hans Wilsdorf first opened Tudor. Wilsdorf chose the name Tudor because he wanted to honor the Tudor period of England.
